21 things teachers can do to grow their PLN

When I first heard of the idea of using Instagram to grow my PLN, I was a little sceptical! Like others before me, I assumed than Instagram was just for sharing pictures of your evening meal or for finding pics of your favourite celebrities! However, as I soon came to realise, like other social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest, Instagram can be a powerful tool for educators!

Instagram is a free photo-sharing platform and, whilst not as big as Twitter or Facebook, is rapidly gaining in popularity.
Why are teachers turning to Instagram?
More and more teachers are starting to leverage the power of social media tools such as Instagram to further their professional development. Some use Instagram to connect with students, parents and other educators whilst others use it to find inspiration or to showcase students work.

How to find other educators on Instagram
- Use the hashtag - The hashtag is a great tool for finding other educators on Instagram. Searching for education related hashtags will help you find teachers & other educators more easily. Popular edu hashtags include: #TeachersFollowTeachers and #TeachersOfInstagram
- Visit education blogs – Many teachers who blog also tend to be active on other social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest etc. When visiting a teacher’s blogs, look out for the Instagram icon or ‘Add me to your PLN’ section.
- Join T2T (Teacher to Teacher) – Teacher 2 Teacher is a free online community supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation. Through T2T, educators come together via Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The T2T Instagram page is a great place to find other educators.
