21 things every teacher should try:
Jar of Awesome!
Reading Time: 1 minute
I recently came across the idea whilst perusing Pinterest. For those unfamiliar with this popular online platform, Pinterest is a visual bookmarking tool that enables you to ‘pin’ images from blogs/websites and collate them so as to make it easier to find later – great for finding and curating classroom resources. From Pinterest, I was led to a wonderful post courtesy of Kasey Bell (read the full article here: http://www.shakeuplearning.com/blog/jar-of-awesome/ ).
The idea is simple, take a jar, any jar, and turn it into a repository for all the awesome/cool things that happen in your classroom - great for capturing and celebrating student success!
Each time a child does something 'awesome' in your classroom or for every 'small win', write it down on a post-it note or blank piece of paper and place it in your jar. At the end of each week, term, month ore semester, pick out a couple of notes at random and read them aloud to the class - a little reminder to your students how awesome they are!

Of course, you don’t have to use a jar. As Kasey suggests in her article, you could replace the jar with a wall, tree, wishing well, or website (blog of awesome). In fact, the Jar of awesome does not need to be confined to your classroom – celebrate all the wonderful things staff do every day with a staffroom jar!
